At the Nebraska Invitational last Saturday, 266 runners had the tough task of trying to out run Cloud County's new tag team. Unfortunately, they fell short of that task.

Freshman Julius Kiptoo Bor ran by the competition capturing the 8K race in first place with a time of 24:12. Kiptoo Bor finished 50 seconds ahead of teammate, sophomore Johnny Shuping, who barely took second, beating out Nebraska's top runner and fellow countryman, Pete Van Der Westhuizen by three seconds.

"One of our goals is to try to get someone to win at Nebraska. We've never had an athlete win it. We've had some place in the top four or five at a meet. But getting one, two in the collegiates was pretty good. Johnny ended up beating his countryman, who beat him last year, they were fourth and fifth last year. Getting that one and two spot against the universities was a good showing for us," Coach Harry Kitchener said.

Sophomore Julius Kiptum joined his international teammates in the top 20, as he placed 12th in the college division and 19th overall in 26 minutes.

Sophomore Michael Loring finished in 30:29, which was good enough for 130th place and 224th overall. Sophomores Jovan McClellan and Jacob Terrell crossed the finish line in 136th, 239th and 139th, 261st respectively.

"The Americans held back a little bit. They didn't run a real good time. A lot of times they don't on that course. The American guys got a good race in and got something out of it. They just have to get into the 27, 28 minute range. We shoot for Emporia in a couple of weeks. They should do a good job at Emporia," Kitchener said.

Twenty-one teams competed in the college division at the Nebraska Invitational, including fellow KJCCC teams Butler County, Johnson County and Garden City Community College. The Thunderbirds placed behind Butler and Johnson County and took ninth overall with 281 points. The Thunderbirds were able to edge out Johnson County by four points and took tenth with 327.

Next race for the men is at Colorado Springs tomorrow at
9 a.m.
