The CCCC Thunderbirds played an amazing game, but came up short against the Butler Grizzlies last Wednesday night in front of a home crowd in Arley Bryant Gymnasium.
In the first match, the score was 27 to 30 with Butler, their record 2-7, winning. Sophomore Darcie Schmitz was the lead hitter for the Lady Thunderbirds. The team earned a total of three aces on the night.
The Lady Thunderbirds fought back in the second match, winning with a score of 35-33. Sophomore Katie Hale and freshman Kelli Cole were starting to get fired up and slammed some spikes down.
As the the third match started, the crowd started making some noise after head coach Staci Elias went over to the student section and told the students and parents to get up and cheer and make some noise. Even with all of the crowd participation, the Thunderbirds fell short 28-30.
The fourth and final match was a downer for the Lady Thunderbirds. They just weren't as focused as the third match, but they still fought the good fight with a final score of 18-30. Butler won the match.
On the night, Schmitz led the team with 21 kills. It was difficult for Schmitz to get past the Grizzly blockers. Freshman Kelli Cole had the second most kills ending the night with seven. She also had a good night. Sophomore Katie Hale slammed down 6 kills and had one ace. Sophomore Kim Schmelzle had four kills for the night. Sophomore Savannah Thomas closed out the night with two kills. Katie Conwell led the team in serving as she racked up two aces on the night.
Overall, the ladies played a hard-fought game. They stayed positive with each other and the coaches did a great job of supporting them and keeping them pumped up. Stay on look out for the Thunderbirds because have got some really talented players on the team.
The Lady Thunderbirds, 5-15, continue their season at home next Wednesday against a non-conference team from Iowa Western Community College. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. with a Fall sports pep rally before the game at 5 p.m.
