Revenge is so sweet, and for the Lady T-Birds, they had a shot at revenge Wednesday night when they went up against Independence Community College at Arley A. Bryant Gymnasium.
The Pirates are the only team to beat the Lady T-Birds this season when they won at home 65-59. Cloud was looking for redemption after a dismal second half in Independence.
Cloud opened up the game on a 9-0 run and was up 11-2 with 14:10 left to go in the first half, behind seven points from sophomore Deandra Schirmer.
The Lady T-Birds extended their lead to 14 with 8:40 on the clock when freshman Kyra Watson's shot put Cloud up 21-7. After that the Pirates went on a 15-8 run to finish out the half trailing by six, 29-23.
"For some reason we got a little gassed early in the game. I believe that's why we lost our lead in the first half," freshman Carolyn Blair-Mobley said.
Blair-Mobley, who later fouled out of the game, opened up the second half for the Lady T-Birds scoring the first six points for Cloud to put them up 35-26.
Independence kept fighting back cutting the lead down to three, 39-36, after both Rhea Codio and Tori Halvorsen made a three-pointer.
With 10:30 left to go in the game, sophomore Sharniece Saunders made the next 10 points for Cloud, the first four coming off of second chance opportunities after grabbing the offensive rebound. Saunders' tenth point during that span put Cloud up by 11, 51-40. Blair-Mobley extended the lead back to 14, following a made three-pointer with 5:50 left.
Cloud was able to hold on to a controlling lead the rest of the way, as they beat Independence 58-47.
Saunders had another big night against the Pirates. In the first match-up she had 26 points and 14 rebounds and she followed it up in the second game, finishing with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
"It always feels good to have a good game, and when you have a great team, it's even better," Saunders said. "As far as beating Indy, well, you can't beat us and get away with it."
Blair-Mobley finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Schirmer had nine points and 10 boards.
"I think we improved our rebounding a lot the second half. We were talking more on defense so that really helped us," Blair-Mobley said.
The rebounding was on Cloud County's side as they out-rebounded Independence 54-39. They also took advantage of their 17 offensive rebounds as they outscored the Pirates in second chance points, 26-5. As for the defense, Cloud forced 13 turnovers during the second half, after only four in the first.
With the victory, Cloud advances to 12-1 on the season and will finish out their non-conference schedule tomorrow against Northeast Nebraska, a team they beat earlier in the season, in Norfolk, Neb., at 6 p.m.
